| • What are some ideas for a 20+ page policy project? |
|
I'm in the process of preparing a 20+ page research paper for a graduate level policy analysis class, but can't come up with a good topic.
I'm looking for a domestic (U.S.) topic with lots of available data/literature, that I can analyze and prepare policy options & a recommendation for. For what it's worth, I'm based out of North Carolina, but can choose a national-level policy to discuss.
Past examples have been whether N.C. should adopt a state lottery (which it actually did), whether to utilize tuition increases to address state budget cuts at the university level, Should an equivalent of the do-not-call list be created for email addresses.
Best Answer will be given to the topic that I choose (or the answer that leads to my selected topic).
Please Help...

| • Why don't Christians want to know the true facts? |
|
Look at historical gods
The belief in "god" seems to be ubiquitous through the ages.
We know, for example, that the ancient Egyptians believed in their gods so fervently that they built massive structures like the Great Pyramid -- still today one of the largest and most enduring human constructions ever created. Despite that fervor, however, we know with complete certainty today that the Egyptian gods were imaginary. We don't build pyramids anymore and we do not mummify our leaders.
More recently we know that tens of millions of Romans worshiped Jupiter and his friends, and to them they built magnificent temples. The ruins of these temples are popular tourist attractions even today. Yet we know with complete certainty that these gods were imaginary because no one worships Zeus any more.
Much more recently, we know that the Aztec civilization believed in their gods so intensely that they constructed huge temples and pyramids. In addition, Aztecs were so zealous that they were sacrificing hundreds of human beings to their gods as recently as the 16th century. Despite the intensity, however, we know today that these gods were completely imaginary. The Aztecs were insane to be murdering people for their gods. Killing a person has no effect on rainfall or anything else. We all know that. If the Aztec gods were real, we would still be offering sacrifices to them.
Today's "God" is just as imaginary as were these historical gods. The fact that millions of people worship a god is meaningless.
The "God" and the "Jesus" that Christians worship today are actually amalgams formed out of ancient pagan gods. The idea of a "virgin birth", "burial in a rock tomb", "resurrection after 3 days" and "eating of body and drinking of blood" had nothing to do with Jesus. All of the rituals in Christianity are completely man-made. Christianity is a snow ball that rolled over a dozen pagan religions. As the snowball grew, it freely attached pagan rituals in order to be more palatable to converts. You can find accounts like these in popular literature:
"The vestiges of pagan religion in Christian symbology are undeniable. Egyptian sun disks became the halos of Catholic saints. Pictograms of Isis nursing her miraculously conceived son Horus became the blueprint for our modern images of the Virgin Mary nursing Baby Jesus. And virtually all the elements of the Catholic ritual - the miter, the altar, the doxology, and communion, the act of "God-eating" - were taken directly from earlier pagan mystery religions."
"Nothing in Christianity is original. The pre-Christian God Mithras - called the Son of God and the Light of the World - was born on December 25, died, was buried in a rock tomb, and then resurrected in three days. By the way, December 25 is also the birthday or Osiris, Adonis, and Dionysus. The newborn Krishna was presented with gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Even Christianity's weekly holy day was stolen from the pagans."
It is extremely hard for a Christian believer to process this data, but nonetheless it is true. All of the "sacred rituals" of Christianity, and all of Christianity's core beliefs (virgin birth, resurrection, etc.) come straight from pagan religions that were popular around the time of Jesus. Articles like this and this can help you learn more. Once you understand the fundamental truth of Christianity's origins, the silliness of this whole thing becomes apparent.
Obviously the pagan believers, from whom Christianity derived its myths, worshipped gods that were imaginary. And thus our "God" today is just an extension of these imaginary forerunners. All human gods are imaginary

| • Does anyone mentally process data using shapes, colors, spatial relationships as symbols? |
|
When trying to solve a problem that requires a logical deduction such as philosophy, math, etc does anyone perceive mentally visual shapes or colors as symbols for various elements in the problem trying to be solved? A simple example could be I may be trying to figure out the relationship between Idea A (war) and Idea B (religion). Idea A is a blue spheroid while Idea B is represented as a flat two dimensional plane. The spatial arrangement of these two objects is based on the outcome of a logical deduction based on other elements that I have not elaborated on. The arrangement of these two objects makes sense to me, however when I try to explain that to someone it sounds really silly. I was speaking with someone about this and they think Im nuts. I am a synesthete so that may have something to do with it but I want to hear from you all.
Famehunt. Yea I have that as well. Days, months, years, decades, centuries, letters, numbers. You have a form of synesthesia as well then.

| • Do viruses and other malware infect USBs when I copy and paste files into one? |
|
My PC has been infected by a bug that I can't get rid of, and I am intending to have it reformatted. I am in the process of making copy files (mostly documents, pictures, music files). I want to have copies in my USB, but I'm afraid that when I upload them onto my reformatted PC, a bug that could have wiggled into the USB or CD or Data Stick would wiggle out and infect the PC again!
The bug is "anti-virus pro 2009." For more information of what has been plaguing me, see here:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AoKh0eTwRCVvFMWtOh9qBMfsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081118001151AAzwoJk
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgYIeMc1zDfoRPIJjvGwUW3sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081118193048AA8r4kj
I have asked friends and others this many times. I ask again because I am worried. If I make copies, will they infect the USB, Memory Stick, and CD?
IF they are indeed infected, when I plug them into an uninfected PC, can their scanners detect and eliminate the bug?
The infected PC is connected to a router, which is connected to my Xbox 360, Laptop, and another PC. These are uninfected. Can the bug travel via router to infect those?
More information: I think there is something wrong with my system registry or something. Certain web pages are blocked from access (e.g. avg.com), certain programs do not initiate (e.g. certain anti-malware programs), and I have scanned my PC multiple times with many different programs. Megabytes have been deleted as a result but the bug/virus/spyware persist. If I continue, my PC could be damaged (is it irreversible?). Even in safe mode (I have system restore off) the bug's tempering is evident.
My final option is to reformat. It seems I am not far from that point. I could download more programs on my USB from elsewhere and install it on safemode) but as I have said, even in safemode, certain programs dont intiate. I couldnt install malwarebytes.
My college applications are due Nov. 30. I have no time to do so many things. The security and integrity of my PC is compromised (actually, 3 ppl in my family use it). Hehe, this little incident made me realize how important national security can be.
Thank you for your help.

| • Calling all super C language programmers ? |
|
Write a program that utilizes a nested for loop structure to read 20 values from an input data file. The input data should consist of arbitrary angular values in degree units. As the values are read in, they should be loaded into a 4 by 5 two dimensional array.
After the array has been loaded, another nested for loop structure should be utilized in order to calculate and output, to an output file, both the sine values and the corresponding angular input values (in degree units).
When your program works correctly, submit two files for grading, one file containing the program source code and another file containing the input data that is processed by the program.
Your source code will be compiled and exectuted, using the input data file, in order to determine if it works correctly.

| • No computer would detect my seagate External Hard drive? |
|
I was doing some beats on my laptop with the music software sample path routed to the external hard drive(EHD), the laptop got stuck, so i turned it off and on, now the laptop dont seem to detect the EHD, i have tried it on my other laptop and my PC and even on a friend laptop, all to no avail. I read on the internet about going to disk management to do all that blab blab blab, did the go to BIO set up to make sure HD is not set to slave, did the plug and un plug thing, install and uninstall usb drivers and none work.
The weird thing is, the laptop i use in doing music and school works never goes on the internet but i do use usb sticks and the EHD to move things about.
My other laptop (2) and My computer do have internet on them
while i was in the process of finding solution to this problem, laptop (2) NOW wont detect any device but my computer can detect my usb sticks but not my EHD and my laptop (1) does detect the usb sticks, the only program i know i intsalled on both laptop(1&2) right before this problem is "morphVox Pro" during the intsalltion there is a part that say assign morphvox as default sound drive which i did on both laptops, i have unintall the program but the problem is still there.
Also, weeks before now my phone normally gets detected but few days before this problem none of my laptops or any computer detects my phone.
My only guess is that there is a virus inside the EHD and my phone that is making them undetected . As for laptop (2) not recognizing any device, i also think the virus can corrupt usb ports as well.
I have been to a computer store, they opened it up to see if it was the power cable and they said it isn't and was told to go to a special data recovery center. Is it possible that they will be able to recover any data if there is a virus in the EHD. I dont want to waste 500-700 pounds on nothing.
i've had the EHD for about 4-5 months

| • I got this popup and I think I have a virus on my computer! HELP ASAP PLEASE!!!? |
|
All of a sudden my firefox window closed and a popup (looking like it came from Firefox) popped up that said:
"ATTENTION! If your computer is infected, you could
suffer data loss, erratic PC behaviour, PC freezes and
creashes.
Detect and remove viruses before they damage your
computer! XP antivirus will perform a quick and 100% FREE scan
of your computer for Viruses, Spyware and Adware.
Do you want to install XP antivirus to scan your
computer for malware now? (Recommended)
Cancel OK"
(spelling errors were theirs)
It said that it was from http://antivirusdefense.com
Does this mean that my computer is already infected with a virus???? I didn't hit OK OR Cancel (I didn't want to click on it at all)... I went to Ctrl + Alt + Delete and hit "End Process" next to firefox.exe and that closed it out.
I'm running an avast scan as I type this... Do I already have a virus on my system?!?!? Please help, I'm so worried!! Thank you, and I'll pick a best answer TODAY!
P.S. Please DONT click on the website I listed... that is just what it said... I didn't 'know it was going to link it! It probably brings you to a virus so I would suggest NOT clicking on it!

| • Need help with a simple c++ program? |
|
I have to write a fairly simple c++ program for my homework but due to procrastinating I am stuck and can't really put anything good together. The program is almost due. Any help here would be very aprreciated. Basically I'll lay out the insturctions on here.
Write a program to process weekly employee time cards and compute pay for all employees of a company. Each employee will have three input data items:
* employee name
* hourly wage rate
* number of hours worked during the week
Employees are to be paid time-and-a-half for all hours over 40 per week. A tax amount of 3.625 percent of gross pay will be deducted. The program output should show each employee's:
* name
* gross pay
* net pay
After processing all employees, the program should display total gross pay, total net pay, average gross pay, and average net pay for all employees.
Four functions should be..
* main()
* inputEmployeeInfo(string &name, float &hours, float & payrate )
* computePay(float &grosspay, float & netpay, float hours, float payrate )
* outputPaySlip(string name, float grosspay, float netpay)

| • I am having trouble syncing my contacts from my SIM card with my new G1 and it's driving me nuts - pls help!? |
|
I just got a new G1 and every time I try to sync the contacts from my SIM card (which I do know how to do), the data transfer icon comes for a min. or two, then goes off for a min. or two, then comes back on and goes off. Then my contacts show up under the Contacts tab. BUT, then they disappear after a few minutes. I have repeated the process numerous times and the contacts never stay where they're supposed to. I have also tried adding new contacts from calls or texts that have come in and that doesn't work either - they disappear after a few min.
Has anyone had a similar problem? If so, what should I do to resolve it? This lack of being able to use basic functions on my phone is driving me crazy!

Measuring Water From Space
ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2008)
Observations from satellites now allow scientists to monitor changes to water levels in the sea, in rivers and lakes, in ice sheets and even under the ground. As the climate changes, this information will be crucial for monitoring its effects and predicting future impacts in different regions.
Sea level rise in one of the major consequences of global warming, but it is much more difficult to model and predict than temperature. It involves the oceans and their interaction with the atmosphere, the ice sheets, the land waters and even the solid Earth, which modifies the shapes of ocean basins. Measurements from tidal gauges show that for most of the twentieth century, sea levels rose by 1.8 mm per year on average.
Since the 1990s, a number of altimeter satellites have been measuring the height of the ocean surface and this has dramatically improved our understanding of sea level rise. Currently, three altimeter satellites cover the entire globe every 10 to 35 days, and can measure the height of the sea surface to a precision of 1 to 2 cm.
These measurements show that since the start of 1993, sea level has been rising by 3.3 mm a year, almost double the rate of the previous 50 years. "It could be that we are seeing a decadal fluctuation, and in the near future the rate will fall again," says Anny Cazenave, from the Laboratoire d'Etudes en Géophysique et Océanographie Spatiale (LEGOS) in Toulouse, "but I do not think so. For several years now, the rate of rise has not changed significantly."
Melting ice fills the sea
Cazenave's team, and other groups, calculates that for 1993-2003, about half of the sea level rise was due to the oceans expanding as they became warmer, and the other half was due to shrinking land ice. Since 2003, ocean warming has had a temporary break but sea level has continued to rise. Now, about 80% of the annual sea level rise can be attributed to accelerated land ice loss from glaciers, Greenland and Antarctica. This has been revealed by a brand new satellite technique, called space gravimetry.
The GRACE mission comprises two satellites, launched in 2002, which measure how the Earth's gravity field varies with time. The gravity field depends on how mass is distributed on Earth, and affects the speed of satellites in orbit. By closely monitoring the speed of both satellites, as they orbit the planet, it is possible to measure the change in mass of water or ice in different regions.
The method has shown that the Greenland ice sheet is losing about 150 gigatonnes of ice each year, two thirds of which is large chunks of ice flowing rapidly into the sea. The combined effect of ice loss from Greenland and West Antarctica has contributed about 1 mm per year to the rising seas over the past five years.
Rivers run low
Using GRACE, Cazenave and others have also looked at changes in water storage in river basins. In the period from 2002-2006, they found that some basins, including the Congo and the Mississippi, have been losing water, but river systems in the boreal regions are gaining water.
Meanwhile, scientists at the European Space Agency, collaborating with DeMontfort University in the UK, have begun to use data from the satellites that measure sea level, to assess lake and river levels on land.
Fresh inland water is much in demand, but those managing it suffer from a grave lack of information about how much of it there is. "The number of river gauges is diminishing every day, and many catchments are now entirely unmeasured," says Jérôme Benveniste of the European Space Agency's data processing centre ESRIN, in Frascati, Italy. "But we have 16 years' worth of data on river and lake levels. It's just a question of processing it all."
The work Benveniste is leading can recreate water levels in reservoirs, or lakes, and reconstruct the annual ebb and flow in large river basins like the Amazon. Other teams are combining these surface water level measurements with gravimetry measurements from the GRACE satellites, to derive the amount of ground water stored in each catchment. "International cooperation is essential in achieving this goal, with global coverage and local validation of the data," says Benveniste. "At the moment, Europe is leading the field."

On July 1-2, 1991, computer-software collapses in telephone switching stations disrupted service in Washington DC, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Once again, seemingly minor maintenance problems had crippled the digital System 7. About twelve million people were affected in the crash of July 1, 1991. Said the New York Times Service: "Telephone company executives and federal regulators said they were not ruling out the possibility of sabotage by computer hackers, but most seemed to think the problems stemmed from some unknown defect in the software running the networks." Within the week, a red-faced software company, DSC Communications Corporation of Plano, Texas, owned up to glitches in the signal transfer point software that DSC had designed for Bell Atlantic and Pacific Bell. The immediate cause of the July 1 crash was a single mistyped character: one tiny typographical flaw in one single line of the software. One mistyped letter, in one single line,
had deprived the nations capital of phone service. It was not particularly surprising that this tiny flaw had escaped attention: a typical System 7 station requires ten million lines of code. From The Hacker Crackdown, by Bruce Sterling, 1992. Story More More More

| • Repair Installation of Windows XP Home? |
|
Recently, my laptop started running slowly on me as all senile laptops do. I saw that even though I was browsing the internet with multiple tabs, listening to music and had Xfire running, System idle process was taking up 99% of CPU usage. So, I used Spybot S&D, cleaned up the registry (not manually), and defragged it...and got less than satisfactory results. So, while I was at it, I decided to try and kill two birds with one stone and did what I thought would decrease my computer's startup time and must have deleted something in startup that was required for booting the computer. Later, since I didn't fix the system idle process problem, my computer froze on me and I turned it off manually via holding down the power button. Now, I can't startup the computer (not even into safe mode); it will just keep playing the Windows XP loading screen over and over.
Well, I've decided to use the repair installation method and when I get to this step, http://z.about.com/d/pcsupport/1/0/d/0/-/-/xpcl1.jpg , It says, "The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer." No mention of a damaged installation.
What should I do here? My data is important to me.

| • Programs not 'acting' installed..? |
|
I recently got viruses in my system files, and ran a restore process that restores system files off a restore disk, that is NOT supposed to harm personal data on the machine. I still have all my files, and my programs are all showing on the Start menu AND in program files, but when I try to run them, it claims they are not installed, or that it can't find files.. Some programs TELL me they are uninstalled, while others simply try to install when I put the disk in. Is there any way I can make them work again without reinstalling everything?

| • Tool to create extra drive? |
|
Hi All,
According to my company's rule, we have to maintain only 1 drive in our laptop, say 'C' drive. But since having all data in 'C' data would make processing later, I thought of going for extra drives.
I know I can format and reinstall XP and create new partitions, but the problem is I would loose following,
a. Joining the laptop to domain
b. Internel patch site
Keeping in this, I want to retain existing installation and also need to create new drives? Is there any tool which does it?
Please help.

| • IM HAVING A PROBLEM WITH MY "CD" (cyclic redundancy error) but...? |
|
Yesterday i burned some video data at office in a brand new "cd" so that i could work at home, and make it there, but upon inserting the cd in my opt. drive and was already copying the data to my hard, right around 80% of completion, the cyclic redundancy error came up and the copying process ended...
now i know that that error is ordinary to old and scratched cd's, but the thing is that my cd was new and scratch free... how could that happen?
now since that file transfer reached 80%... is there a way that i can get that 80% and stop the process right there? since it wouldn't continue...
i mean, can i get that 80%? because after i "ok" the error the file is being removed from the copy destination...
PLEASE HELP I NEED THAT FILE OR ELSE IM FIRED!

I just bought Castlevania (dual-pack): Aria of Sorrow and Dissonance.
The problem is I cannot save the game I played. I already went to the room were there's a rotating cube that go ask 'save?' and you will have to choose between 'yes' (red highlight) and 'NO' (blue highlight).
And after selecting 'yes' and turned off my GBA then go turn it on again
to play my "saved data" it's not there anymore!?
I tried clicking the 'quicksave' in the pause menu then in the saving room too. But nothing has changed, it still doesn't save my game.
What's wrong? Is it me? Am I doing the saving process wrong?
Help pls.! thank you guys!!!

| • In mysql, saving utf8 characters in latin1 encoding is possible, why? |
|
Everyone knows about this, but why is this possible?
If the characters from the client are in utf8, mysql encodes them in latin1 and then saves them in the table. When a client retrieves the characters from the table, mysql reverses the process so that the characters are back to utf8 before sending back to the client.
My question is, what is the use of the encoding process done by mysql?
If mysql always saves whatever the client sends to them as binary data without doing any encoding/conversion. When the client retrieves back the data, the client must be able to get back what he/she wants. Why adding an encoding process in between to complicate things?
Thanks a lot.
